State Activities You Should Know About
Advocacy Alert: 5/9/2007
In the East:
The State Senate of New York passed a resolution recognizing May 15, 2007 as Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome Day in the state of New York. This resolution, J-1811, was sponsored by Senator Craig Johnson and passed on May 1, 2007. Senator Johnson took this measure at the request of Sherrill Robinson, a constituent from his district who has CFS. May 15 is the CFIDS Association of America's 15th Annual Lobby Day, and is recognized as such in the resolution. You can read the full text of the resolution at http://www.cfids.org/advocacy/nyresolution.pdf.
(An alert was sent to Grassroots Action Center subscribers in New York earlier today, with a call to reach out to local media.)
Out West:
UTAH: On Saturday, May 5, Senator Orrin Hatch spoke to groups of health care professionals and patients at the conferences in Sandy, Utah, presented by OFFER (www.offerutah.org). The organization's founder, Dr. Cindy Bateman, presented Senator Hatch with an award for his support of CFS research and education activities in Utah and throughout the U.S. Senator Hatch recognized Dr. Bateman and other conference speakers, including NIH-funded researchers Dr. Nancy Klimas and Dr. Kathy Light and CDC researcher Dr. Suzanne Vernon, as well as patients and advocates who have raised awareness and contributed to progress in the field.
NEVADA: The Nevada State Legislature will consider the funding request to support the Whittemore-Peterson Institute for Neuroimmune Disorders, which recently celebrated its ground-breaking at the University of Nevada-Reno. This center will study and care for CFS patients, as well as others with neuroimmune disorders. Advocates Andrea and Annette Whittemore have led the effort to create the Institute and to raise statewide and national support for it.
Support for the Center is being debated in the legislature in the next two weeks. Please express your support for the funding bill -- AB316 -- at https://www.leg.state.nv.us/74th/opinions/Poll/?CFID=222391&CFTOKEN=48676058. The site will accept comment from anyone, not just Nevada residents.
