Research Matters
Science and Legal News on Postexertional Malaise
Studies by a CFIDS Association-funded research team have led to publication of two papers documenting reduced function in CFS patients following exercise testing. Both papers demonstrate problems inherent with use of a single exercise test to assess CFS disability.

Study Shows Low Cortisol in Women with CFS
A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism reports that women with CFS produce less morning cortisol, a hormone important to helping the body maintain homeostasis (biological balance).

CFS Expert Publishes Paper for Medical Specialists
Nancy Klimas, MD, a top CFS researcher and physician, recently published an overview of CFS findings for others in the medical field. The publication, Current Rheumatology Reports, keeps specialists abreast of medical advances by inviting experts like Klimas to consolidate noteworthy research findings on a specific topic. Her article highlights many of the significant CFS findings of the past year, focusing on inflammation, immune function and neuroendocrine interactions. The abstract is available to the public at Current Rheumatology Reports.
Winter Chronicle Features Research
Research is the central topic of the current issue of the CFIDS Chronicle, the only magazine dedicated exclusively to information and support for the CFS community. Research news and special reports kick off the winter issue, also packed with practical advice and profiles of courage and accomplishment of people living with CFS. The winter 2008 issue mails to current members on February 8. Philadelphia Leads CFS News Flurry
CFS is getting considerable coverage in the Philadelphia area, in part because of “The Faces of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome” photo exhibit having appeared there in January. Here’s a rundown of the coverage CFS received in that city and others so far this year.

Photo Exhibit Hits Portland, Phoenix, then Tampa
"The Faces of CFS" is currently on display at Lloyd Center in Portland until February 11. Next up on the national tour of the photo exhibit are Phoenix, Arizona, from March 6–10, and Tampa, Florida, from April 21–28. As this moving and informative display makes its way west and then south, media coverage (see above story) and public awareness grow. CFS Education & Empowerment Comes to Tampa
The next “kNOw MORE CFS” seminar is coming to Tampa, Florida, on April 26. Part of the Association’s Education & Empowerment Series, these seminars connect CFS experts with patients and their families to exchange vital information. CFIDS Association scientific director Suzanne Vernon, PhD, and expert CFS physician Cindy Bateman, MD, will speak at at the Tampa event.

Fresh off the Press: Magazine Documents CFS History
Defining Moments: 20 Years of Making CFS History is the first publication to document the history and progress achieved by the CFS community. Full of first-person historical perspectives—featuring special "Defining Moments" essays by gifted writers Laura Hillenbrand and Zachary Sklar—and photographs, this 61-page special issue mailed to Association members and donors on January 23.
