Research Grants: Announcements

Request for Applications

Note: Deadlines for the 2006 Research Grant Review have closed. 2007 Review deadlines will be announced December 2006.

The CFIDS Association of America is the leading organization working to conquer chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also known as chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS). The Association works toward this mission by: building recognition of CFIDS as a serious widespread medical disorder, securing a meaningful response to CFIDS from the federal government, stimulating high-quality CFIDS research, improving providers' abilities to detect, diagnose and manage CFIDS, and providing information to persons with CFIDS and enabling the CFIDS community to speak with a collective voice. Since 1987, the Association has provided $4.18 million in grants to CFIDS researchers.

The purpose of the Association's peer-review Research Grants Program is to provide financial support for the highest-quality pilot CFS research studies and enable investigators to collect sufficient data to expand their studies with support from government or private funding sources.

Research grants are generally made to cover the direct costs of such items as salaries for professional and technical personnel, patient costs, equipment, supplies, travel and other miscellaneous items. Institutional indirect costs should not exceed 10%.

Researchers interested in applying for a CFIDS Association Research Grant should submit a pre-application letter of intent briefly describing the research study, including hypotheses, objectives and goals; methods to be employed; preliminary studies; estimated budget; and qualifications of the principal investigator (and key collaborators, if applicable).

If the research project described in the letter of intent is determined to fall within the funding priorities of the Association's Research Grants Program, the principal investigator will be invited to submit a Research Grant Application.

Eligibility:
Grants are awarded to non-profit research institutions located primarily within the United States and its territories. We have also funded researchers in Canada, France and Israel. Current members of the Association's Board of Directors and Scientific Advisory Committee are not eligible to receive Association research grants as principal investigators. However, they may serve as unpaid consultants or collaborators for Association-supported projects and may seek grants once their service on the Board or Scientific Advisory Committee has ended.

Application Procedure:
Grants are competed annually. Interested applicants should submit a pre-application letter of intent briefly describing the research study, including hypotheses, objectives and goals; methods to be employed; preliminary studies; estimated total budget; and qualifications of the principal investigator (and key collaborators, if applicable). If the research project described in the letter of intent is determined to fall within the funding priorities of the Association's Research Grants Program, the principal investigator will be invited to submit a Research Grant Application.

Review of Applications:
All applications are evaluated by a peer-review Scientific Advisory Committee. The Committee assesses each application on the basis of: support for the hypothesis, relevance to CFS, innovation and originality, appropriateness of the budget, expertise and experience of the principal investigator and other staff, and overall scientific merit.

Award of Grants:
Grant decisions rest with the Executive Committee of the Association's Board of Directors, acting upon the recommendations of the Scientific Advisory Committee.

Term of Support:
Grants are made for a maximum of one year, with disbursements made monthly or quarterly as mutually agreeable to the principal investigator and the Association.

Duplication of Support:
When requests for the support of a project are submitted to more than one granting agency, support from the Association cannot duplicate other support. However, Association support is permitted to supplement other support.

Sources of Funds:
The fulfillment of grant awards made by the Association's Board of Directors is contingent upon the availability of the necessary funds. Private donations  comprise the principle source of research funds raised by the Association.

Confidentiality of Information:
In processing and reviewing applications, the Association will use its best efforts to not disclose confidential or proprietary information contained in submitted proposals. Members of the Association's Board of Directors and Scientific Advisory Committee are required to sign non-disclosure agreements. However, the Association has no other mechanisms to maintain or guarantee the confidentiality of information, and as a not-for-profit corporation, does not have the financial resources to: (a) sustain liability for disclosure of information, nor (b) institute mechanisms to maintain the confidentiality of information. Submission of application(s) is deemed to verify acceptance of these provisions.
