About CFS
Chronic fatigue
syndrome (CFS), also known as chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS), is
a serious chronic illness that results in profound fatigue and a number of other
debilitating symptoms.
CDC research indicates that
at least more than four million Americans have CFS. Unfortunately, less than 20% of them have
been diagnosed. The low rate of diagnosis shows a need for increased
understanding of CFS among individuals experiencing symptoms of the illness, the
general public and health care professionals.
The illness has proven to be both
complex and mysterious, and there is still no known cause or cure. However, there
is abundant scientific evidence that CFS is a real biologic illness, not a
psychiatric condition. And there are treatment options that can help patients
manage symptoms, cope with the impact of the illness, improve function and
manage activity levels.
