ABC News (9/13/07) and CNN (9/17/07) reported on a study by California infectious disease clinician and researcher Dr. John Chia that links CFS with enteroviral infection of the stomach. Researchers performed endoscopies and stomach biopsies on 165 CFS patients, all of whom had had longstanding gastrointestinal complaints. Eighty-two percent of the specimens from CFS patients tested positive for enteroviral particles, compared with just 20 percent of biopsy samples taken from 34 control subjects. Ft. Worth physician Dr. Larry Sharp and CFS patient Carol Sieverling were featured in a segment about the illness on “DFW Closeup” on KDAF, The CW 33 in Dallas. KNRV, Reno’s NBC affiliate, devotes its regular “Hart of the Matter” feature to an introduction to the Whittemore-Peterson Institute at the University of Nevada-Reno.  Anchor Joe Hart interviews founder Annette Whittemore about her inspiration and vision for this facility that will be devoted to the study of chronic illnesses including CFS.  (Nevada) (9/07)

In “Lasting Effects for Hurricane Katrina Volunteer,” a feature story on KSFX Fox 27 and KOLR CBS 10, reporter Angie Weidinger interviews Kristy Burton-Vunesky, a woman whose CFS developed just after she returned from volunteering in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  The interview focuses on her symptoms and how her life has changed since getting sick after Katrina. CFS patient Kristy Romero was the featured guest on a segment about the illness on “Midday Sunday,” an Emmy-winning weekly public affairs program on KTTV (Channel 11), Fox’s Los Angeles affiliate, on August 19. She was interviewed in conjunction with the display of “The Faces of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome,” the traveling photo exhibit that is part of the national public awareness campaign. “12 on Health,” a half-hour, weekly health program produced by News 12 Connecticut, features a segment on CFS on the episode aired August 4 and 5.  Host Gillian Neff interviews Connecticut CFIDS Association President Dan Troph and Dr. Laura Monserrat, a clinical psychologist specializing in CFS from New York City.  (Connecticut) (8/04 – 05/07)

 

New York City’s NBC affiliate, WNBC, airs information about CFS on its August 3, 5:30 p.m. newscast’s “Health and Wellness” segment.  Dr. Philip Bialer of Beth Israel Medical Center provides basic information about the illness, including symptoms and treatments options.  The story mentions the public awareness campaign and the online video includes a link to the Association’s Web site. “The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet” on the Fox network includes a full segment on CFS on the July 24 broadcast.  Guests include Brian Bernard of New Jersey and Kathy Rabin of Boston, PWCs and participants in the national traveling photo exhibit; Shanley Crutchfield, PWC of Baltimore; and Dr. Donnica Moore, Brian’s mother and women’s health expert.  The segment focuses on their stories of living with CFS. The online video includes a link to the Association. The cable channel Retirement Living produced an episode of Healthline that aired May 21 and featured Association Board member Terry Hedrick, Dr. Alan Pocinki and Fred Friedberg.  A panel discussion included Eleanor Hanna of the National Institutes of Health and Dr. Giovanni of the Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers.  The Association’s Web site was displayed prominently throughout the program. The Australian Broadcasting Corp.’s JTV youth channel ran a segment on ME/CFS on its show “Hack.”  The 7-minute feature includes host Steve Cannane interviewing two patients (ages 31 and 22), a physician and the head of the ME Association of Australia. (Australia) (5/11/07)

The BBC reports on the advantages of distance learning for 22-year-old CFS patient Michelle Penny.  “She has been virtually housebound since 1999 because she is noise and light sensitive and left school at the age of 16 without any qualifications. Ozarks Public Television devotes a segment of its “HealthStyles” program to a discussion of CFS and features patient Kristy Burton-Vunesky.  She describes how the illness has affected her life and is shown performing some of her daily activities.  The show airs on KOKZ in Springfield, Missouri; and KOZJ in Joplin, Missouri.  (Missouri) (5/04/07)

Dr. Benjamin Natelson, professor of neurosciences at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, is the featured guest on two segments of “Comcast Newsmakers,” a production of Comcast Cable Company.  He discusses the basics of CFS and its affects on sleep in patients. The segments air the weeks of May 2 and May 16.  (New Jersey)  

On May 25, Washington, D.C.’s WUSA Channel 9 aired a 90-second segment about CFS that was filmed in front of the traveling photo exhibit at Union Station.  The story featured CFS patient Darcey West and internist Dr. Alan Pocinki. (Washington, D.C.) (5/25/07)
